ICE 3 - (407) - Velaro D
Velaro D is the DB version of the Eurostar E320 and has the a speed limit of 320 Km/h the same as the Eurostar E320. Both Eurostar and DB trains are built by the same company SIEMENS who also built the ICE T and 3.
Unlike the Eurostar TMST and the E320 if DB Verlaro D decides not to run services to the UK as it has its certificate for the Chanel Tunnel the Yellow Fire doors and fireproof breaks will not be installed and Eurostar will still have a monopoly. If however DB decides to definitely launch service to and from the UK as it already has its certificate then needed tests will have to be carries out before any passenger service date can be given. This means these trains will be installed with the Yellow Fire doors and fireproof breaks. This will result in Eurostar for the first time have competition against them from another foreign competitor being the German state operator DB (Deutsche Bahn). |
Deutsche Bahn Germanys train operator announce back November 2010 that they plan to run services from Germany to London ST Pancras International. Shortly after they re-announce that they won't be running services till 2015. In December 2012 DB said that due to Software problems when coupling trains together that these trains won't be running to London till at least 2016.
Deutsche Bahn placed an order for fifteen trains valued €500 million in November 2008. On 18 April 2010, Deutsche Bahn presented the first Velaro D at Siemens' Krefeld plant. It is designed for operation at up to 320 km/h (200 mph), is wider, quieter and more energy-saving, should be less susceptible to malfunctions than its predecessor, and incorporates additional crashworthiness and fire safety measures.
The new train was supposed to be used mainly for international services from Germany to France, Belgium and the Netherlands. The new type's safety measures are in line with the new specifications for operating passenger trains inside the Channel Tunnel, allowing the Class 407 to be used on the services that DB planned to operate from London to Amsterdam and Frankfurt in 2015. Delays to the delivery of the new trains led to the cancellation of the planned service to London.
The new train is designated Class 407 or new ICE 3 and was originally scheduled to enter service at the end of 2011. This date has been since been postponed several times. In December 2013 the first four trains delivered to DB were licensed for domestic operation as multiple units and started with passenger traffic. Four more trains are expected for delivery in spring 2014, whereas the remainder of eight trains shall be used by Siemens for test runs in France and Belgium to gain type approval there. In June 2011, Deutsche Bahn ordered an additional Velaro D set in order to replace an ICE3MF set damaged in an accident in August 2010.
