The proposal of a new high speed line was made some years ago for a new high speed line to run from a new London Euston station to Old Oak Common before descending into tunnels before the Chiltens. The reason for HS2 project being adjusted to go in to tunnels below the Chiltens is because of the local residents and wild life protection agencies, some people however are just against the project of HS2 no matter what, even though it doesn't affect them. These types of people are referred to as NIMBY's (Not In My Back Yard). The planed HS2 will then run from Old Oak Common and under the Chiltens to Birmingham. The aim of HS2 is to take a majority of the intercity services off the over congested West Coast Mainline and to bring that traffic on to the High Speed line (HS2).
French manufacture Alstom has announced that if they win the contract in 2019 to build the trains that they will not only be double decker but to be made in the UK at a new plant near Liverpool. Furthermore Alstom had said that it will create lots of jobs for people in the UK and the local area near Liverpool.
Further information from Alstom on trains for HS2 has been given. Alstom has said that they will make single deck versions of the trains that been proposed so far which is a double decker. The idea behind the single deck version of the trains is that these trains will be narrower to be able to comply with the UK loading gauge as well as being able to work on the High Speed line. The Single deck train will also be fitted with tilting system like the current Virgin Pendalino's that runs from London Euston. This was an announcement made by a UK spokesperson for Alstom. The other benefits of having this train means that only one maintenance facility is needed to manage and maintain all the trains instead of several facilities being needed to manage different trains from different manufacturers.
The planed project of HS2 is due to become operational in 2026 with new trains that are both despote and dedicated. The despote trains (Single decker version of the Double Decker Train) will be able to run on both the High Speed line and the Conventional lines meaning that these trains will be able to go to further destinations that are not on the High Speed line. The dedicated trains (Double Decker Trains) however will only remain on the High Speed line, this is due to the UK loading gauge compared to the rest of Europe. Trains that are built to be dedicated to our High Speed line are built to a wider loading gauge that is standard for the rest of Europe.
The Original plan for HS2 was for it to link up with the up and running HS1 line from St Pancras to the Channel tunnel. The link was planed to run from just short of London Euston round to the HS1 tunnels just before London St Pancras International. There is already a part link that has never been used and it is now confirmed that HS2 will not be linked to HS1. This means passengers who which to travel to Kent or continental Europe will have to disembark at London Euston and use the links provided for London St Pancras International.
A spokesman for Eurostar said some years ago that if they could run services from the north using the original proposed link to HS1 that they would consider calling at the never used Stratford international continental platforms which Eurostar already have the choice of using but currently refuse to use saying it will add up to 8 minutes on to the journey times both to continental Europe and to London St Pancras International. Eurostar said it is unnecessary for them to call at the station as it is only 12 minutes train ride away from Eurostar's London terminal St Pancras International saying it will just add unnecessary time to the journey.
The plan for HS2 to Birmingham is to use the disused Birmingham Curzon street station that is currently in a state of disrepair. By having HS2 running by 2026 journey times to these destinations can considerably be cut encouraging more people out of their cars and on to the new trains that will be running on the high speed line easing the congestion on the motorways like the M1, M42, M5 and the M6/M6 toll.
Since the proposal of HS2 their has been a strong opposition against the HS2 project saying that the project will be a white elephant and that the money can be better spent on other project like improving our motorways and on upgrading the West Coast Main Line which has already had an upgrade done on it that did not work and went vastly over budget. As there has been strong opposition against the HS2 project the Government have been pushing bills through parliament making some aspects of building HS2 hard to block or change however not impossible. When the final bill goes through parliament it should guarantee that the project will go ahead and be built.
In addition it should be within a year that construction starts on the new HS2 project. This project is planed from what some sources has said to start at both ends and meet in the middle linking it up. The same sources has also said that building HS2 line like this will spread out the cost of the construction of the line from London to the north.

Modal Shift
It is now time to bring Britain’s railways into the 21st Century. We need railways that are going to stand the test of time not now but for many many decades ahead. Our current Victorian railways are struggling and upgrades are more costly and less productive.
Never has the need for speed been as real as now. Building HS2 will create a massive amount of jobs not only in its construction but also when it opens and becomes operational. There will be jobs on the trains, in the signal centres and in the stations on the route.
In addition building HS2 will create a massive amount of modal shift from the airlines, specifically on short internal flights but also may reduce car consumption by a large amount.
With the collapsing of Flybe it is absolutely essential that we have HS2 built along with Northern Powerhouse Rail. By having a vast network of high speed lines across not just Britain but Europe we can all help to contribute to improving our green Prudential's.
With the collapsing of many airlines over the past decade the Railways have shown to be more secure against folding however that isn’t to say it won’t happen.
If we take a look at our airlines choices out there in the past decade there has been quite a few which have a case of boom and bust very quickly. Along with the collapsing of Flybe there has been a momentous shift in to using more greener forms of transport.
An example of this is Eurostar with direct services to Calais, Lille, Paris, Brussels and Amsterdam which have all a decrease in air traffic to these destinations on short haul flights from places such as London.
We shouldn’t just look at Eurostar as our only Example. France has a vast network of TGV HSL’s across the country spreading from north to south and central to southwest.
It’s not just France and the UK we can look at as examples of how we can make international and intercity travel greener. We can also look at countries such as Spain which has developed a vast new network of HSL’s in recent years spreading across the country and connecting internationally to other European countries HSL’s.
We have trains running from Lyon to Barcelona, from Bordeaux to Barcelona, from Paris to London, Amsterdam, Brussels, Cologne, Milan, Frankfurt, Strasbourg and Switzerland.
These Routes have all made people consider the way they travel and making the greener option to go by train more appealing to them. HSL’s are also seen as more appealing to the Airlines due to airlines check in times and by the time the airplane has taken off from the airport you could already be halfway there towards their destination.
Building HS2 won’t just be a stand-alone railway as it will be able to interlink with our existing classic network as happened in other countries. Having HS2 Built would mean a vast amount of intercity traffic could be move Over to HS2 from Classic Mainlines such as the WCML, MML and the ECML which would all have some services transferred freeing up these lines for both commuter services and Freight services.
If we can free up space on our existing networks by building not just HS2 but a network of HSL’s across Britain we can also improve our freight services and get many Lorries off our road and transported by rail instead saving millions of tons of CO2 Emissions getting into our atmosphere. The choice is yours we build HSL’s.
